Questions to Ask When Comparing Safaris

Trying to compare safaris has become increasingly difficult in recent years. Many suppliers offer what on the outset may appear to be the safari that you are looking for only to cut corners on certain items that may impair the quality of the safari and your enjoyment. Below are listed some questions and answers that should help you determine if a safari offering truly has all that you desire for your African adventure.
Q. What kind vehicles does the safari use?
A. Sadly, many safari providers have taken to using minivans for their safaris as a means of trimming costs. Jambo! Travels does not feel that minivans are adequate for safari (often times, the minivans are unable to negotiate muddy or poorly maintained roads), and we do not use them on any of our safaris. More importantly than the lack of being able to go anywhere is that many suppliers pack as many as nine people into a minivan. We use specially modified Land-Rover 110's exclusively, and we limit the number of clients in our vehicles to four. This not only ensures that everyone has a "window" seat, but that no persons sit in adjoining center seats, compromising everyone's comfort. For certain groups, we do use a stretch Land-Rover which can accommodate seven travelers in the same comfort as four clients in a Land-Rover 110.
Q. Does the Safari have a flying (mobile) tented portion?
A. Taking a safari that utilizes a tented portion will provide you with the genuine safari experience and emotions. Some safaris utilize tented lodges, and while these lodges are a nice addition to a safari's itinerary, these large lodges do not provide quite the same experience of being in the midst of the African wilderness as do flying-tented camps. Please be aware that flying-tented safaris tend to cost more than lodge-only safaris.
Q. What kind of tents are used?
A. There are many kinds of tents used on flying-tented safaris by different suppliers. We offer two levels of tented safaris: Standard Camping and Special Camping. Our Standard Camping uses ridge tents that can accommodated two travelers, and our Special Camping utilizes Selous tents that are quite large and comfortable. Standard Camping provides our clients with the true camping-safari experience while helping to keep costs down while Special Camping provides the genuine Out-of-Africa experience with all of its attendant luxury and exclusivity.
Q. Are private or public campsites used on the safari?
A. In the national parks where camping safaris are permitted, there are generally two kinds of campsites available: Public and Private. Public campsites can have a multitude of people at them. All of our safaris utilize private campsites that are reserved for our groups alone and are selected for optimum animal viewing.
Q. Are shower and toilet tents provided?
A. Public campsites have long-drop toilets (outhouse) that are not terribly appealing. We provide both shower and toilet tents for all levels of our camping safaris.
Q. Will there be any other people on the safari?
A. When some suppliers say that a departure is "private," they may actually mean that it is private for a number of groups that are combined. All of our "private departures" are exclusive to the individual group that books the safari. No other clients shall be in the vehicle or at the private campsite with the booking group. We do have "set-departure" safaris that pair up to eight people.
Q. What is the maximum number of people on the safari?
A. Many suppliers have set-departure safaris that have as many as 24 people on them. It is difficult to experience the vastness and solitude of the African wilderness when surrounded by two dozen people and a support crew. For this reason, we set the maximum on all of our set-departure safaris at eight people plus the crew.
Q. Are park fees and internal air costs included?
A. Please be sure to include all associated fees for safaris that you are comparing. Many suppliers separately state the park and air fees. All of our safari costs include all necessary items in the one price. Generally, the only items that are not included in our costs are drinks, tips and personal items (such as laundry).
Q. Is the price set even if park or air fees increase?
A. Some suppliers separately state the park and internal air fees because if there is an increase in the fees, the cost of the safari will increase commensurately. Once a client has signed on to a safari with Jambo! Travels, we guarantee that the cost will not increase except for government taxes (excluding park fee increases).
We hope that the above will be helpful to you in comparing safaris. Please contact us to discuss any other questions or concerns that you may have. We are happy to assist you so that you will be sure to have the kind of African experience that you are seeking.
