
STANDARD ITINERARY,
8-DAY CLIMB
(SHIRA ROUTE)
DAY 1-Machamé
Gate to Machamé Hut
Land Rovers will take you to the Machamé
Gate (1800 meters) at the entrance to the forest. From this point,
you will gradually ascend through the forest to a ridge bordered
by streams on either side. You then proceed onwards to Machamé
Hut (3000 meters), just clear of the forest. Total time 5-7 hours.
DAY 2-Machamé
Hut to Shira Hut
Walking up a steep ridge from the Machamé
Hut, you will pass through moorlands (3600 meters) and head straight
towards Kibo peak. After 4 hours, the path flattens out into a
gorge and ascends more gradually to Shira Hut (3810 meters) on
the Shira Plateau, lying west of Kibo. Total time 5-7 hours.
DAY 3-Shira Hut to Shira
Plateau
Walking along the Shira plateau (3600 meters),
you may explore Shira Cathedral, Shira Needle and Cone Place.
Shira Plateau, the oldest part of the mountain, is the remains
of the crater floor of Shira Peak. Total time based upon time
spent exploring the Shira Plateau.
DAY 4-Shira Plateau
to Lava Tower Hut
Leaving the plateau, you move to the Lava
Tower Hut (4600 meters). Total time about 5 to 7 hours.
DAY 5-Lava Tower Hut
to Arrow Glacier Hut
A two hour climb moves you from the Lava Tower
Hut to the Arrow Glacier Hut (4785 meters). You may spend the
afternoon exploring the glaciers all the while being stunned by
the awesome views of the Western Breach. Total time about 2 hours.
DAY 6-Arrow Glacier
Hut to the crater floor
The day's activity is climbing the Great Western
Breach. You will camp inside the crater (5640 meters). Crater
walks may be taken if you feel up to it.
DAY 7-Crater floor to
Uhuru Peak to Mweka Hut
Today you will climb the last little bit to
Uhuru Peak (5895 meters), and then descend to Mweka Hut stopping
for a brief rest and some food at the Barafu Hut. Total time 7
to 9 hours.
DAY 8-Mweka Hut to Mweka
Gate
You finish your descent of Kilimanjaro at
the Mweka Gate. After signing the registry at the Mweka Gate,
you will be transported back to the hotel for some well earned
relaxation.
ADDITIONAL DAYS
You may choose to spend additional days on
the mountain to assist in acclimatization. Since all nights are
spent camping, the itinerary can be flexible. Generally, the sites
for the extra days are selected a day or so before the climb.
