DAY 1-Machamé Gate to Machamé Hut
Land Rovers will take you to the Machamé Gate (1800 meters) at the entrance to the forest. From this point, you will gradually ascend through the forest to a ridge bordered by streams on either side. You then proceed onwards to Machamé Hut (3000 meters), just clear of the forest. Total time 5-7 hours.
DAY 2-Machamé Hut to Shira Hut
Walking up a steep ridge from the Machamé Hut, you will pass through moorlands (3600 meters) and head straight towards Kibo peak. After 4 hours, the path flattens out into a gorge and ascends more gradually to Shira Hut (3840 meters) on the Shira Plateau, lying west of Kibo. Total time 5-7 hours.
DAY 3-Shira Hut to Barranco Hut
The path continues directly up the ridge towards Kibo peak. Four hours into the day's climb, the path forks to the right and descends into a gorge. You will spend your night at the Barranco Hut (3950 meters). Total time 5-7 hours.
DAY 4-Barranco Hut to Barafu Hut
Crossing the Barranco Valley, you will climb the Barranco Wall (non-technical) and then follow the Kibo South Circuit. There are wonderful views of Kibo's southern glaciers if the weather is clear. You will lunch next to the river in the Karanga Valley and then continue to the intersection of the South Circuit and the Mweka Path. The ascent continues up a ridge for about 2 hours to Barafu Hut (4600 meters). Total time 6-7 hours.
DAY 5-Barafu Hut to the Summit to Mweka Hut
The climber arises around midnight to make the final ascent to the summit. Rebmann Glacier is reached after a stiff climb up a very steep, loose scree slope. Passing a cliff and then entering the gap between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, the climber reaches the crater's rim, near Stella point (About 6-7 hours). Another hour of climbing places the mountaineer on Uhuru Point (5895 meters)-the Roof of Africa. The Descent is via Stella Point. You will have a short rest at Barafu Hut and then continue to the Mweka Hut.
DAY 6-Descend to Mweka Gate
The climber finishes the descent of the mountain, lunching en route. After signing the registry and the Mweka Gate, the climber is transported back to the hotel for some well-earned relaxation.
Additional Days
We highly recommend that
climbers spend an additional day on the mountain to assist in
acclimatization. Since all nights are spent camping, the itinerary
can be flexible. Generally, the extra days are spent in the Karanga
Valley which shortens the day prior to the summit bit.
