TANZANIA
As the largest east-African country, covering
over 930,000 sq. kms., Tanzania has much to offer the adventurous
traveler. Snow-capped Kilimanjaro, the teeming plains of the Serengeti,
the unique beauty of the Ngorongoro Crater, legendary Zanzibar,
and the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean may all be found in this
exciting African nation.
While the coast enjoys a tropical climate,
inland the climate is pleasantly warm but dry. Mountain areas,
such as Kilimanjaro, have the best of all worlds with warm weather
by day and cool, comfortable nights. The altitude also keeps the
mosquitoes and other insects at bay.
The country's scenery, varying from mountain
ranges to plains and lakes, with the great Rift Valley cutting
through it, is awe-inspiring. Over a quarter of the country's
territory is set aside as game reserves and parks. In the Serengeti
alone, the world's largest concentration of plains animals is
to be found.
Tanzania is an independent republic with a
mainly Christian and Muslim population. Since independence in
1961, it has been notable for its stability and tolerance. The
national language is Kiswahili (Swahili), although many people
do speak English.
Getting to and from Tanzania is hassle-free
as it has good air links with Europe and there are good over-land
services both within the country and to Kenya.
BASE CAMP
We will provide you with excellent accommodations
at Kilimanjaro that offer old-fashioned tranquillity and comfort.
An old-world style hotel on the verdant slopes of Kilimanjaro
becomes your base camp. The hotel is beautifully situated on twelve
acres of mature, well laid-out gardens and has a fine variety
of exotic trees and flowering shrubs. From the gardens on clear
days, there are magnificent views of Kilimanjaro's two peaks:
Glacier-capped Kibo and rocky Mawenzi.
Guest accommodations are provided in cottages
around the grounds. Each cottage has its own distinctive style,
and all rooms have private bathrooms with either a bath or shower.
The hotel is renowned for its well-prepared menu using vegetables
from its own gardens and home-baked bread. Additionally, a range
of wines is always available.
For recreation, guests may choose to use the
hotel's swimming pool or croquet lawn or simply relax in the comfortable
bar and lounges and trade stories with other travelers from all
over the globe. Further, beautiful walks are to be had through
the surrounding banana and coffee farms and along the river which
borders the hotel on one side. Where time permits, the colorful
local markets are well worth a visit.
CLIMBS WITH AMERICAN
LEADERS
While Jambo! Travels does offer climbs which
are accompanied by our American staff a couple of times a year,
the majority of the climbs we organize utilize Tanzanian guides.
In fact, the Tanzanian government requires that a Tanzanian guide
(from the Chagga Tribe) accompany all climbing parties.
Using a specially-trained cadre of local guides
gives us greater flexibility in the climbing dates that are available
and allows us to accommodate most any travel plans. Further, we
can provide climbs at a reduced cost and still maintain the highest
standards of service and safety.
Please see our Summit Challenge information for our next American-led
expedition to Kili.
